| ALMA Common Software (ACS), Status and Development | ICALEPCS 2009 |
| ACS provides the infrastructure for the software of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array and other projects. Using CORBA middleware, ACS supports the development of component-based software, from high-level user interfaces down to the hardware device level. It hides the complexity of CORBA beneath an API that allows the application developer to focus on domain-specific programming. Although ACS, now at release 8, has been used operationally by the APEX radio telescope and at the ALMA Test Facility, the commissioning of ALMA in Chile brings major challenges: new hardware, remote operation and, most important, upscaling from 2 to 60+ antennas. Work now turns to scalability and improving the tools to simplify remote debugging. To further identify potential problems, the University of Eindhoven is formally analysing ACS. Meanwhile, new developments are underway, both to respond to newly identified needs of ALMA, and those of other projects planning to use ACS. Examples include the refactoring of the interface to the CORBA Notify Service, integration with the Data Distribution Service, generation of state machine code from abstract models and of Python binding classes from XML schema. |

| Hardware Device Simulation Framework in the ALMA Control Subsystem | ADASS 2008 |
| Hardware device simulation development is a fundamental task which has to be addressed when writing control software. Simulations are used to decouple the software from the hardware layer, and provide a powerful tool to ensure the correct functionality of a control system before integrating real devices. This paper presents the design of the ALMA hardware device simulation framework as part of the Control subsystem. This framework provides basic code generation, allows simulation of devices through an external process connected to a real-time FIFO (as the real hardware), and provides an alternative, direct and more flexible simulation. This has simplified development and testing as developers can now focus on the non-trivial aspects of a simulation. |

| Software regression testing: practical experience at the ALMA test facility | SPIE 2008 |
| The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is a joint project between astronomical organizations in Europe, NorthAmerica, and Japan. ALMA will consist of at least 50 twelve meter antennas operating in the millimeter and submillimeterwavelength range. It will be located at an altitude above 5000m in the Chilean Atacama desert. The ALMATest Facility (ATF), located in New Mexico, USA, is a proving ground for development and testing of hardware, software, commissioning and operational procedure. At the ATF emphasis has shifted from hardware testing to software and operational functionality. The support of thevaried goals of the ATF requires stable control software and at the same time flexibility for integrating newly developedfeatures. For this purpose regression testing has been introduced in the form of a semi-automated procedure. Thissupplements the established offline testing and focuses on operational functionality as well as verifying that previouslyfixed faults did not re-emerge.The regression tests are carried out on a weekly basis as a compromise between the developers' response- and theavailable technical time. The frequent feedback allows the validation of submitted fixes and the prompt detection of sideeffectsand reappearing issues. Results of nine months are presented that show the evolution of test outcomes, supportingthe conclusion that the regression testing helped to improve the speed of convergence towards stable releases at the ATF.They also provided an opportunity to validate newly developed or re-factored software at an early stage at the testfacility, supporting its eventual integration. Hopefully this regression test procedure will be adapted to commissioningoperations in Chile.
